The ‘Silent’ synopsis
After contemplating their past and inner selves, the cast of ‘Scenes at Dawn’ present their diary entries to us. Through these entries we learn about how their childhood and their experiences still affect them today, particularly when it comes to relationships.

Based on poetry, letters and drama texts by Tzveta Sofronieva and on fragments of personal narratives of the actors
Scenes at Dawn is an oratorio about human helplessness, about the fear of losing the person next to us, about longing, about illusions, about the power and the solace we find in awakening. Between the dream and the crisis of the coming day, there is the time of daybreak- time of the truth that emerges between the excessive fatigue and anxiety. How we endure, how we live, what happens to us when our feelings are turned inward and reverberate in the cavity of the body? The most important rehearsal is the one where we try to express our feelings, and more importantly, become able to share them. We put the audience in the role of the desired partner. We give it scenes of eroticism and death, scenes of personal shame and reverie. The stage becomes a psychodrama laboratory. We walk the audience through the spaces between loneliness that closes our hearts and the kind of loneliness that pushes us to a new encounter.
Visual Dramaturgy Scorecard
Scenography 9/10
I am a fan of the dark, intimate vibes Emergency Theatre brings to each of their plays. They don’t overuse the space; rather they shape it into a room adorned by unsettling memories. The beauty of their stage designs comes from their industrial, minimalistic approach.
In this play, only chairs and a table were used, but it was indeed enough to convey the performance.
Lighting Design 10/10
One thing I particularly enjoy about their performances is how sound and lighting are mostly controlled by the actors themselves. I was thrilled to see them manually turn light bulbs on and off when they needed to focus on a character.
Costume Design 8/10
The costumes were simple, which fitted the mood; it would look out of place to have extravagant dresses while the actors strip away their emotional shields.
However, they were similar to those used in the previous show I saw; it would have been nice to see a more distinct fashion choice for this play.
Choreography 10/10
The performance required strong control of body and mind. You could see the effort put into every movement and every silence. Even without words, they connect with the audience through well-thought-out management of space and time.
Bonus
Food
As a “foodaholic”, a play immediately becomes much more captivating to me when something is cooked or served.
While you won’t see brownies being baked, like in Happy Together | Unhappy Together, we see a lighter choice: cabbage and carrots being cut. The scent was delicious. I could smell the freshness even from afar.
Whether the act of cutting food represented a stay-at-home mother or a “perfect wife,” I was left wanting to jump on stage and share the meal. Thankfully, I can reassure you that the food did not go to waste.
The universal verdict
🔴 Red: heavily reliant on text/wordplay.
Contrary to ‘The Room of Pleasure is Empty’, Scenes at Dawn—despite its strong visuals —is difficult to decipher without understanding the dialogues.
I sadly cannot recommend it to an audience of non-native speakers, like me, or the d/Deaf community, as it relies so heavily on the spoken word.
However, it is a “must-see” for aspiring set designers or theatre directors, as Emergency Theatre always brings something unique to the stage.
Final thought for the ‘outsider’
Emergency Theatre once again captures the audience with strong visuals and directing choices that leave you wanting more from them, but Scenes at Dawn is not the right play to see if you don’t know Bulgarian or if you are part of the d/Deaf community.

След като се вглеждат в миналото си и във вътрешния си свят, актьорите от „Scenes at Dawn“ споделят с нас своите дневникови записки. Чрез тях разбираме как детството им и преживяното продължават да им влияят и днес – особено когато става дума за връзките им с другите.
За какво всъщност беше
По текстове – поезия, писма и драматургични откъси от Цвета Софрониева, както и фрагменти от лични истории на самите актьори.
„Scenes at Dawn“ е своеобразен ораториум за човешката безпомощност – за страха да не изгубим човека до себе си, за копнежа, за илюзиите, за силата и утехата, които откриваме в пробуждането. Между съня и кризата на настъпващия ден стои мигът на зазоряването – време, в което истината изплува някъде между изтощението и тревожността. Как издържаме, как живеем, какво се случва с нас, когато чувствата ни се обърнат навътре и започнат да отекват в телата ни? Най-важната „репетиция“ е онази, в която се опитваме да изразим чувствата си – и още по-важно, да ги споделим. Публиката е поставена в ролята на търсения партньор. Пред нея се разгръщат сцени на еротика и смърт, на личен срам и съзерцание. Сцената се превръща в лаборатория за психодрама. Водят ни през онези пространства между самотата, която затваря сърцето, и онази, която ни тласка към нова среща.
Визуално-драматургичен разбор
Сценография 9/10
Харесвам тъмната, интимна атмосфера, която Emergency Theatre създават във всяко свое представление. Те не „препълват“ пространството, а го оформят като стая, наситена с неспокойни спомени. Красотата на сценичните им решения идва от индустриалния минимализъм.
Тук има само столове и маса – но това напълно стига, за да се изгради цялото преживяване.
Светлинен дизайн 10/10
Особено ми допада, че звукът и светлината често се управляват от самите актьори. Беше впечатляващо да ги видя как сами включват и изключват лампите, когато искат да насочат вниманието към определен персонаж.
Костюмен дизайн 10/10
Семпли и на място – пищни костюми биха стояли неуместно, когато актьорите буквално „свалят“ емоционалните си защити.
Все пак напомняха на тези от предишното им представление; щеше да е интересно да се види по-отличим визуален избор тук.
Хореография 10/10
Изисква се изключителен контрол над тялото и съзнанието. Във всяко движение и всяка пауза личи вложеното усилие. Дори без думи, връзката с публиката е силна – чрез прецизно използване на пространство и време.
Бонус
Храна
Като човек, който обожава храната, винаги се въвличам повече, когато на сцената се готви или сервира нещо.
Тук няма да видите печене на брауни като в „Happy Together | Unhappy Together“, но има нещо по-леко: рязане на зеле и моркови. Ароматът беше изненадващо апетитен – свежестта се усещаше дори от разстояние.
Дали този акт символизираше домакиня или „перфектна съпруга“, така и не стана ясно, но определено ми се прииска да се кача на сцената и да се присъединя към тях. За щастие – храната не отиде на вятъра.
Обща оценка
🔴 Червено: силно зависимо от текст и слово.
За разлика от „The Room of Pleasure is Empty“, „Scenes at Dawn“, въпреки силното си визуално присъствие, е трудно за разбиране без да следиш диалозите.
За съжаление не бих го препоръчал на хора, които не владеят езика (като мен), нито на d/Deaf общността, тъй като разчита изключително много на говоримия текст.
В същото време е задължително за гледане за бъдещи сценографи и театрални режисьори – Emergency Theatre винаги носят нещо различно на сцената.
Финална мисъл за „външния“ зрител
Emergency Theatre отново впечатляват с визуална сила и режисьорски решения, които те карат да искаш още. Но „Сцени на разсъмване” не е най-подходящият избор, ако не разбираш български или ако си част от d/Deaf общността.
